Fashion Fails of the Week

Who says you're never too old for prom? We do! Sorry Juliette Lewis, but you and your August Osage County premiere look are way deserving of a fashion fail this week! The purple dress needs to be sent back to the "90's" where it belongs! Nothing can come close to what Kristen Wiig wore to the Anchorman 2 premiere! Her Prada dress just screams fashion fail! Justin Bieber managed to look all holiday in a red two-piece, but still not our favorite look. Cheers to the new year and some hopefully better dressed celebs!

A fresh start for Viktor & Rolf who open their first flagship store in Paris

2013 marks a big year for Viktor & Rolf, who since 2008 have belonged to Staff International (part of Renzo Rosso’s group). Whilst celebrating the 20th anniversary of their label, the Dutch Duo Rolf Snoeren and Viktor Horsting also extol their return to haute couture as well as the start of their international development with the opening of their first flagship store in Paris. An exclusive meeting with both designers.2013 marks a big year for Viktor & Rolf. Whilst celebrating the 20th anniversary of their label, the Dutch duo Rolf Snoeren and Viktor Horsting also extol new challenges; a comeback as a member of the haute couture world as well as developing their label on an international level, by the opening of their first flagship store in Paris, an expansion backed by Staff International, part of Renzo Rosso’s group that has owned Viktor & Rolf since 2008. Interviews: Viktor Horsting: We became part of the group because on a business level it is good for us because obviously it will allow us to grow but then the owner of the group who is Enzo Rosso, he is also a creative guy. Rolf Snoeren: I think, nowadays, everybody needs a partner to grow in business. Viktor Horsting: For us, it was very important that it was in Paris because we have always shown here; we started here showing haute couture, we show our ready-to-wear so we really consider Paris to be like our fashion home. Rolf Snoeren: We would like a store that kind of is invisible, a store that is not really there. Then, we started brainstorming and came up with the idea to make everything in one fabric so it is quite extreme. Viktor Horsting: It makes you think of something classical but it is also absent, it is more about what is not there than what is being shown and then the fact that it is all executed in grey felt gives it a very surreal twist obviously. Rolf Snoeren: We feel this is a good starting point for future expansion and that really is the language for future stores and corners. Viktor Horsting: It is a bit like a template; we wanted to work not only on a store that is a one-off, we wanted to work on a visual style that could be declined to corners and future stores. Rolf Snoeren: After twenty years of existence, this is what we celebrated this year, to go back to couture next to the ready-to-wear shows and opening a shop for us makes it feel as if we really fit in every category of fashion. Viktor Horsting: It feels very complete. Music free of right/Bandit & Nikit - 2012.

Party Outfits: Men put on their party suits

Sensual gowns, detailed bustiers and chic necklines, sparkling, transparent sequins: before every party, the dress reinvents itself for an even more glamorous look. Includes interviews with Donatella Versace, Elie Saab, Raf Simons, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Giambattista Valli. Before every party, we ask ourselves endless questions about dress choice: should I wear sequins? Do I go for short or long? Designers have countless ideas for suggesting and reinterpreting dresses that so beautifully showcase women. This season, do not hesitate to pick out a rather short cocktail dress. A bonus is that teamed with accessories and a jacket, this kind of dress can be easily worn multiple times for different occasions. Take note of the return to a certain sensual glamour. This is translated onto dresses through asymmetrical shoulders, revealing legs through large splits, low-cut necklines and low backs. Some even choose to play with transparency. Another winning touch on a dress is the bustier effect. Women go mad for it and they pull it off brilliantly. Of course, parties allow us to wear daringly all that glitters: rhinestones, sequins and other glistening pearls are popular as ever. This season, originality lies in the choice of embroidery and other embellishments, like a piece of art. Lastly, you can even be adventurous with volumes, but not just anywhere. If you choose to emphasise volume on the top, go for simplicity and subtleness on the lower half and vice-versa. Interviews: Donatella Versace: My idea was to present the woman as super glamorous, with precise hair and make-up, details in the clothes, and using hoops and eyes which reveal and conceal at the same time. Elie Saab: It really was this desire to present a very delicate, fragile woman. That is why most of the dresses are transparent. Raf Simons: The bustier, of course, is a piece that is very pure in the way that it shows the body and the way it shows the woman, the waist and the breasts. And I thought it was in itself already a beautiful element to build on. Maria Grazia Chiuri: That’s the mix that we want to find in our dress; a really couture shape with elements of embellishment that reminds us of the natural elements. Giambattista Valli: I already had this idea of doing something extremely light, giving everything volume. We dress so many women around the world that it is no longer a question of season. It isn’t a question of the weather; it just has to be something that floats in the breeze, something dream-like. Music free of right/Bandit & Nikit 2012.

Party Outfits: the tuxedo, an alternative to the LBD…

An alternative to the little black dress, the tuxedo is the perfect basic for avoiding a fashion faux pas and being elegant and chic in any situation. An alternative to the little black dress, the suit is the perfect basic for avoiding fashion faux pas and being elegant and chic in any situation. Whether literally translated or reinvented, you never get fed up with it especially as designers seize the opportunity to deliver new versions. So, during the build-up to end-of-year parties, why not opt for a tuxedo?! Here is a selection…an uncluttered, graphic version. Worn over a minimalist top, a jacket lined with satin, without buttons and a sharp cut. Simplicity reigns equally at Haider Ackermann, in a long style. Jean-Paul Gaultier loves to revisit classics, delivering on the runway a slightly 80s version of a satin double-breasted jacket with large pockets embroidered in jet-black, contrasting with the opacity of crepe trousers. Roberto Cavalli opts for a smoking jacket that highlights the silhouette with a gilet that curves the bust whilst the back is in satin and printed with patterns. Black and white on a short, square-shouldered jacket from Roland Mouret. At Versace, studded leather thigh-high boots and Spencer jacket lapels with flashes of metallic galvanise this ensemble. Diametrically opposed Mary Katrantzou goes for size in volume and in length and plays with prints tone on tone. Another variation is the smoking jumpsuit, very chic from Hermès and like a second skin from Alexandre Vauthier. Sexy with a top hanging as you dare, with rhinestones, sequins and an open vest over a bra. Cuts reach new levels of modernity, and why not try the sobriety of female tailcoats with the lining discretely embroidered in sequins. Music free of right/Bandit & Nikit 2012.

Party Outfits: an accessory completes a look

" Bags, jewellery, gloves, belts; an accessory makes a fashion statement and punctuates your look during these end-of-year festivities! Includes interviews with Michael Kors, Matthew Williamson, Alber Elbaz and Dean&Dan Caten.Whether giving hair a rock’n’roll touch or for a look stamped with softness, an accessory can spice up any bland outfit, giving it a bit more character. Hence, its importance…from bags to jewellery, gloves and belts, accessories are a striking fashion aspect, used to punctuate your look during this end-of-year period… The first element: gloves. Teamed with a bustier dress or as a continuation of a jacket, the glove brings a hint of elegance and completes an outfit. Long or short, in leather, it modernizes and personalizes a silhouette. In monochrome or in contrasting colours, printed and matching your clothes, it is completely graphic and chic. In tulle, hung from the wrist or in netting embroidered with rhinestones, it lights up a simple outfit. Secondly, we have the belt. This winter, it gives the waist a metallic touch. Rather impressive, it encircles both daytime clothes and eveningwear…The final essential element is jewellery. And all its individuality resides in the way you wear it, whether just on an ear, or tightening up hair…With more elaborate vision, it launches clothing into 3D. You can overindulge, you can hoard them… A true ornamentation, jewellery lights up every silhouette with its radiance. In short, accessories permit all fantasies and it would be a shame to leave it behind when welcoming in the New Year… Interviews: Michael Kors: The funny thing about their accessories, I like things that are kind of a punctuation point but at the same time I think about function. Matthew Williamson: It’s about decoration and ornamentation and I love that 3D approach. Alber Elbaz: I want to try to work with plenty of elements, with cuts, with volume, with stories, with flowers, with insects, with words, with flat shoes, with heels, with colours, with black, with white, everything works. Dean & Dan Caten: The accessories are a little bit oversized like the bowties are big, the jewellery is big. It’s time to just have fun with fashion. Music free of right/Bandit & Nikit 2012.

The Chanel Métiers d’Art show 2013/14 took place in Dallas in the United States

Every year in December, Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld transport us to atypical places around the world – this time, to Dallas in Texas – for a spectacular show celebrating the Métiers d’Art…Includes interviews with Karl Lagerfeld, Kristen Stewart, Zoe Kravitz and Geraldine Chaplin.Every year in December, Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld transport us to atypical places around the world – this time, to Dallas in Texas – for a show honouring the Métiers d’Art, these houses that Chanel has acquired over the years, consequently ensuring its survival (Lesage, Maison Michel, Lemarié, Desrues, etc. and more recently Causse and Barrie Knitwear). For the 2013/14 collection, a reconstructed rodeo barn within the famous art-deco building of Dallas Fair Park, welcomed the cowgirls in shirred tweed suits, denim dresses and jackets or leather ensembles mingle with Squaws, feathers crowning their heads, and wearing blouses with fringed sleeves, thick, printed scarves and ponchos or long sequined gowns embroidered with stars… Once again, a wonderful way of taking inspiration from revisited world cultures and creating something modern, evoking the story of the double C house and its creator – Dallas is the city where Coco Chanel received the Neiman Marcus prize in 1957-, in celebration of the knowledge and handcraft of these exceptional Métiers d’Art. Guests come from around the world, including Kristen Stewart, the muse for this Paris-Dallas collection, to attend a drive-in where Karl Lagerfeld’s second film ‘The Return’ was projected and ended the evening with a country hoedown… Interviews: Karl Lagerfeld: It is a mix of the kind of refined American culture from the early 19th century, but put into the 21st century. It is an idea, it is a feeling. I wanted to avoid everything that was too first degree. I think I wanted a poetic touch. That is my job and I have great people who work with me. I couldn’t do it alone, from Virginie to every girl who takes care of one department. Even if I develop the idea and the sketches all myself, because I don’t even do that, but to work it out, you need great people. Every detail is important and you cannot do it just like that. Everything has to be elaborate, refined and beautifully done and we are lucky that we have the companies to do that. Chanel sells all over the world, the clothes are supposed to be worn all over the world but they can have a local ethnic inspiration but at the same time, it has to have a universal touch and not to be something folkloric because then it would be limited. Kristen Stewart: It’s transportive. It takes you somewhere else and without feeling remotely like a costume. Everything was really elegantly beautiful and forward and kind of badass and yet cowboy themed which you wouldn’t think went together. Zoe Kravitz: I thought it was amazing. He literally combined all of my favourite things like the Civil War inspired, Native American, Mexico thing is the most amazing thing I have ever seen and it’s the way that I like to wear Chanel. My favourite thing about Chanel is that if you pair it with something really worn down it is the most amazing combination to me and he did that tonight and it was mind-blowing. Geraldine Chaplin: He is a great artist and he is a hard worker, but especially a great artist and he’s a visionary and he’s a genius. Music of thee fashion show.

18th edition of the Designers' Christmas Trees

At the heart of the Salomon de Rothschild Hotel in Paris, the 18th edition of the Designers’ Christmas Trees association has rooted its forest abundant in creative and iconic works, dreamed-up by the biggest names in couture, design and gastronomy. Includes interviews with Marie-Christiane Marek, Chantal Thomass, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Kenzo Takada, Pascale Mussard, Stanislassia Klein, Stéphane Rolland and Yiqing Yin. At the heart of the Salomon de Rothschild Hotel in Paris, the 18th edition of the Designers’ Christmas Trees Association, an idea founded by Marie-Christiane Marek, has rooted its forest abundant in creative and iconic works, dreamed-up by the biggest names in couture, design and gastronomy. Jean-Paul Gaultier, Stéphane Rolland, Pierre Hermé, Olivia Putman, all came forward and invented unique pieces auctioned off to raise money for the fight against cancer for professor Khayat’s A.V.E.C foundation. An auction followed by a gala dinner brought together numerous celebrities who rallied around this worthy cause and an event that has become unmissable over the years… Interviews: Marie-Christiane Marek: I chose Professor David Khayat’s foundation three years ago. I thought that research in this area needed to be helped out and absolutely all the funds collected from the auction are completely donated to the foundation. We refused some this year but we still have about forty Christmas trees including some by big names. Chantal Thomass: It’s always tricky at the start because you ask yourself ‘but what am I going to do?’ as I have already done ten or fifteen and then something came to me, I invented this utterly silly idea that interlock together, a sort of game that interlocks together but you can do it with a young woman. Jean-Paul Gaultier: How do you dress a Christmas tree? Well, there you go. You put a corset on it and it’s perfect. We gave it vinegar so that we could tighten the waist. The chest is strong and engaging. She is very well-endowed, next time it will be a sailor shirt! Kenzo Takada: I made this tree from crane origami, almost 1000 pieces of crane, which will bring plenty of good luck. Pascale Mussard: We had to think about something that suits us at ‘petit h’, so by reusing materials, that is something that we share with Isabelle Leloup. Isabelle has suggested something that I think it brilliant, light, mobile, portable, using our beautiful materials. Stanislassia Klein: I have always been guiding line in my work incorporating tulle, fairy land and enchantments. At times, I say to myself, I make clothes that belong in the dustbin and that mean nothing. And there, all of a sudden, I find that it turns out to be a creative piece of work and frankly, I find that fantastic. Stéphane Rolland: I collaborated with Raphel Amargo who was one of the best flamenco dancers in the world, if not the best. I imagined him in a snow coat; he was away on tour so I jumped on a plane and I went to see him in Istanbul. We took the photo and I left. Yiqing Yin: This sculpture of 3640 pieces of thread I believe, held together with pearls and secured at the bottom. We are still a young house, we function with the help of a lot of interns and so that was also an occasion to unite the teams and let everybody work together. Marie-Christiane Marek: For the first time, we did a first edition last year in Japan, and this year we have the Belgian edition. And in theory, next year in New York. I think it’s great to export this idea and that the Designers’ Christmas trees grow. Music free of right/Bandit & Nikit - 2012

Fashion Fails of the Week

Hello wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen! Carla Gugino's Herve Leger really pushed the limits on how low she could go without showing off too much of the girls. The next fashion fail of the week is a blast from the past. Yes, Veronica Corningstone and Ron Burgandy walked the carpet for the UK Anchorman 2 premiere, and we are not fans of her look. The nude lace number washes Christina Applegate out and totally ages her. Then there's Kristen Bell whose ill fitting combo and odd pattern is totally not working!

The enchanting lights of Christmas, from New York to Paris

Each year, in the run-up to Christmas, the world’s biggest cities light up. Images from Paris and New York and interviews with Tony Spring, President & Chief Operating Officer and Josh Groban, singer. Each year, in the run-up to Christmas, Paris dons its brightest lights. The Champs Elysées, the world’s most beautiful avenue offers a new festive look, made up of 4000 garlands and rings that twine around the 134 trees all along the avenue. And it is actress and former model Laetitia Casta, fairy godmother for a day that had the privilege to flick the switch! Windows of the biggest shops also display their creativity and magic as at Galeries Lafayette with decorations inspired by a fairytale ‘Once upon a time at Christmas…’ An enchanted forest, drawings of creatures, guest starring ‘Beauty and the Beast’. The centerpiece of the display is a magnificent Christmas tree, 20m tall planted beneath the store’s famous dome. Just around the corner, Printemps calls upon a special guest, American actress Gwyneth Paltrow who came to unveil the 11 window displays, all designed by Prada, the trendiest ready-to-wear label, beneath whose Christmas tree we would love to find a Prada signed parcel. Snow is falling in Paris and at Bon Marché with an animated Christmas incorporating a graphic gold and white look, a dreamy invitation to a magical forest. Across the Atlantic, in New York, world-famous department store Barneys provides in all its windows, a futuristic insight into Christmas, an idea conceived by French artist, Joanie Lemercier, centered around a lights’ display. Father Christmas, dressed all in white, swaps his traditional sledge for a faster, more innovative mode of transport, enticing visitors to soar over New York for a virtual adventure. As for the windows of huge store Bloomingdale’s, they honour an international Christmas…a festive opening included a children’s choir and a highly acclaimed concert. Interviews: Tony Spring: We had a wonderful concert with the New York children’s’ choir. They did a spectacular job, I think we had over 1000 people in the courtyard and of course the celebrity guest singer tonight was Josh Grobin. Josh Groban: We are celebrating a real New York tradition tonight which is the opening of the Bloomingdales holiday windows which, having come to New York since I was a kid for the holidays, it is something I think that we all look forward to, those moments in New York when you realise that this is the start of the season that we all find to be our favourite and this is my favourite. Highlights from Jakarta Fashion Week

Like numerous cities across the world, the Indonesian capital has hosted its own fashion week since 2008. Propelled forward by the media and sponsors, as well as the Fashion federation, local designers take advantage of this opportunity to show and promote their latest couture creations. With shows from Oscar Lawalata, Priyo Oktaviano, Dian Pelangi, Toton and Tex Saverio. For Priyo Oktaviano, we shift to the other extreme with colors, embroidery and even a sexy edge. Shorts and miniskirts are adorned with silk ruffles and gold is a common theme. Successfully combining tradition and modernity, the designer, winner of several awards, is one of our favorites. This fashion week also makes room for young, emerging designers, who are part of a development program. An example is Dian Pelangi who gets everybody talking with her colorful and covered up creations, respecting the Muslim culture which is very important in Indonesia. Young designer Toton Januar, raised in New York, mixes a own chic and urban look with his home country’s craft, using glistening embroidery to highlight Asian colors. Finally, for young designer Tex Saverio, who is scarcely 30-years old, experimentation takes on a new stature. His creations are transformed into works of art, with pieces sculptured onto clothes, several of which have already been worn by Lady Gaga.

Highlights from Sao Paulo Fashion Week

With more than 20 shows over five days, Sao Paulo, whose fashion week has just ended, is the 5th most important of these events behind Paris, New York, Milan and London. Through the diversity and quality of the labels present, this proves that Brazil is an expanding country, particularly in terms of fashion. The best known: Alexander Herchcovitch. He presents in Paris but never forgets his motherland. The designer delivers a casual yet sophisticated style, a mark of femininity, playing with layering, the use of capes, transparency and leather. He alone unites all the trends seen on the runway this fashion week. Leather is trending for Ronaldo Fraga. It is his material of preference; ribbed, perforated, cut…leather is either worn as a small touch or dominates an entire look… It also present in the Animale collection, with elaborate designs on bell-bottom trousers worn by Karlie Kloss and on jumpers. Lace, mixed with wool, brings a new sophistication. An urban spirit is found at Colcci, highlighted by sculptural Gisèle Bündchen who sets cameras flashing as she makes her return to the runway. Here, jogging trousers are teamed with high heels! For Juliana Jabour, the sweatshirt takes pride of place, yet treated in a sophisticated manner with graphic inserts, across a grey palette. The world of sport is highlighted by Osklen who, inspired by the next Football World Cup hosted by Brazil, imagines silhouettes linked to this. A palette of bright colours like grass green and red is treated for both men and women. Men’s fashion is also presented, with touches of daring originality from Joao Pimenta with safety pins and animal skin used as capes. Another trend uncovered on the Brazilian runways is shininess, as demonstrated by Patricia Motta, with the use of lamé or rhinestone embroidery. Pedro Lourenço plays with iridescent materials, creating a silhouette constructed around the shift dress and peplum style. The lights of Sao Paulo by night inspire pieces adorned with sequins for Forum. For Triton, sequins are found all over and take on a rock attitude… Femininity derived from a 40s aesthetic with mid-length dresses and skirts and remarkable work on sleeves and volume from Fernanda Yamamoto. We remain in the 40s with Acquastudio with inspirations borrowed from New-look to Christian Dior, with cinched waists and calf-length skirts. From Gloria Coelho, we have a geometric, strict line. Some favour image over style, as is the case for FH for Fause Haten, who unveils his collection on Avenue Paulista. Lino Villaventura pours pots of paint over the faces of models whilst Uma Raquel Davidowicz, like Rick Owens in Paris, uses a dance troupe to demonstrate the elasticity of her clothes. Music from the fashion shows.

Highlights from Moscow, Russia's Fashion Week

" No fewer than 70 labels have just presented their collections at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Moscow, Russia, with plenty of support from sponsors. With focus on shows from Goga Nikabadze, Tatyana Parfionova, Carmen Emanuela Popa and Julia Nikolaeva.Twice a year, Moscow hosts Russian Fashion Week. Conceived in the early 2000s, this Fashion Week, usually held in April and at the end of October has gained international recognition since 2011, when Mercedez Benz become the official sponsor, followed by L’Oréal Professional and Ebay this season. The main events take place at the Central Exhibition Hall where stands, exhibitions and conferences unfold throughout the week, not forgetting the fashion shows. No less than 70 labels come to present their collection, from fully-fledged couturiers to emerging designers. For Spring/Summer 2014, four shows capture our attention. Goga Nikabadze, a 28-year-old Georgian designer, allows romanticism to take on a new dimension in his mixed collection. For Tatyana Parfionova, a genuine artist living in St Petersburg, her love of different art forms is felt all over the clothes on which paintings, pen strokes and abstract drawings are present, creating a colourful and appealing wardrobe. Carmen Emanuela Popa’s collection combines several worlds across strong, very couture silhouettes in rigid materials, reminiscent of the imaginings of Alexander McQueen. As for Julia Nikolaeva, she highlights an urban, easy-to-wear wardrobe that is always a success especially as the designer dares add a message every season, fighting in her own way for more just democracy in her country. " Seoul Fashion Week uncovers this city as a hub of very dynamic and in-vogue designers, who have trained in other cities around the world. With shows from J’Apostrophe, Jarret, JKOO, The Studio K and Kye.Seoul Fashion Week uncovers this city as a hub of very dynamic and in-vogue designers. The proof is in the women’s collection from J’Apostrophe. Heading up the women’s line is Jiseon Lee, a former student at Parsons School in New York, the city in which she still lives. The edgy spirit and urban feeling of the Big Apple are felt throughout this collection, dominated by white and transparency. Our attention then shifts onto the mixed collections, which are essential to this fashion week and there are three that merit a look. First of all, Jarrett: for designer Ji Youn Lee, the material becomes the most important part of this futuristic collection, in which cuts are mixed with volume, working for men as well as women. For the designer duo from JKOO, a young label founded in London in 2010, it is all about prints and colours. Images of black and white give way to large-framed flower prints presented in bright and imaginative tones for both men and women. This lightness desired for the summer months is rather successful. The Studio K, Hyejin Hong loves to mix the abstract with pure lines. The result is a mix’n’match of masculine and feminine wardrobes, both transformable and adjustable to your liking. Finally, for the young label Kye, it is the men’s line that catches our eye. A rapper look with a hint of humour is quite successful, including bandage collages and golden outfits, mixing urban and sportswear with a comfortable self-confidence. Stars Rock The Red Carpet at the EMA's!

It's no surprise that Miley Cyrus's MTV EMA look was what everyone was talking about. The fashion tribute to Notorious BIG and Tupac was paired with thigh-high peep-toe boots and as always, left little to the imagination. Katy Perry went conservative in a form fitting Zac Posen dress and later heated things up with a second outfit for her performance of "Unconditionally" Ariana Grande rocked a black and white lace cocktail dress, completing the look with a chic high ponytail. The most daring look of the night belonged to Australian rapper Iggy Azalea, who looked ready for a wardrobe malfunction in her leg-baring gown.

In attendance and talking to us were Krysten Ritter, AnnaLynne McCord, Camilla Belle and Eva Amurri.

New, young Brazilian designers reinvent the concept of jewellery

" With his label Sagrado (meaning ‘sacred’ in Brazil), young designer Danilo Ferreira reinvents the idea of jewellery, becoming a leading light in a new generation of in-vogue Brazilian jewellers with their more simple and more modern creations…includes an interview with Danilo Ferreira. When you think of jewellery made in Brazil, it is often linked to ethnicity, colours, handcrafts and the nature of this immense country. Today, a new wave of young designers dares to try more modern and more original things. This is the case for Danilo Ferreira, who in his Parisian atelier develops his label Sagrado, which means ‘sacred’ in Brazilian, with rough jewellery, based on untreated materials like deer antlers or crystals, glorifying further this link with his country of birth. Includes images of Gizelda Queiroz jewellery, the ateliers of Bia Vieira, jewellers at Dona Coisa, Armajon Biojoais and Danilo Ferreira’s ateliers-apartment. Interview: Danilo Ferrira: Brazil is an extraordinary place; it’s enormous, it’s completely different, each state has its own gastronomy and its own cultural way of developing things, it’s fascinating! I am a young designer and my label is not very well known and my audience is different. It is an audience which loves to give value to something which really has feeling. It is very important for people who wear my things to know what they signify. Otherwise, they have no value. I grew up in a small town, almost a village; there are less than 5000 inhabitants and I was surrounded by this dusty, savage atmosphere so I have certainly kept many memories but beyond this, I try to mix a European side with this memory, which will always be present, I can never hide it. Normally, I chose a material in accordance with the feeling I have with it. All the stones in my collection at the moment are stones found in one place or another that I have visited and that I have travelled to and they are materials that I have a connection with. I think that a product must have energy, otherwise it is dull. Who would want to wear something that has no energy? And so, it is this that I want to put across, something basic and ordinary but also extremely strong. Music free of right/ Bandit & Nikit - 2012.

Rio de Janeiro: an upcoming and trendy city

" With its new concept store ‘Dona Caisa’, its niche hotels situated at the heart of the trendy Santa Teresa quarter and its immense luxury mall, Rio de Janeiro has recently become a city of hype. A report including interviews with Jean-Michel Ruis, Igor Saboia and Gabriel Palumbo…Rio de Janeiro is renowned for its legendary beaches, its sugarloaf and the statue of Christ the Redeemer. But beyond the clichés, this metropolis retains its more inconspicuous corners which have become the coolest parts of the city. This is the case for the Santa Teresa quarter, with her winding, cobbled streets, spectacular views of the bay and old colonial houses that attract a new, dynamic crowd including a Frenchman, the owner of atypical hotels… Situated in the Botanical Garden area, the ‘Dona Coisa’ presents itself as part of the hype concept store in Rio. You will find a variety of products ranging from food to clothes, lots of them with the stamp ‘Made in Brazil’. Brazil is the new Eldorado of South America. Host of the upcoming 2014 Football World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games, Rio becomes a leading travel destination, attracting more and more people. The dynamics are developing and the world of luxury steps up to this. For example, a new mall opened in 2012 that now houses all the international luxury brands and Brazilian labels. With a champagne reception and a theatre, this large, designer shopping centre situated in the Barra area heralds a new era for this ever-changing city. Interview: Jean-Michel Ruis: Welcome to this place which is like a Belle Époque residence, so a traveller arrives in Rio and really feels as if he is in a local home, so all the furniture and all the details are Brazilian. It is not a modern, boutique hotel like the ones you see today. Igor Saboia: We sell Brazilian brands but we choose the artist here, we always try to find new artistic talent that has a level of quality and beauty. There are many different things; this is a home, you can relax in the garden, you can drink coffee and talk, sometimes we can have lunch here and make a meal. It’s a very relaxed place to have very good moments and to buy things or not. Gabriel Palumbo: This huge mall is a unique place in Rio; it gathers all fashion brands, international brands and top national brands so we are very glad that we were able to construct a mall like this in Rio. Vivaz, a Brazilian couture label that counts on glamour and sequins

" Vivaz, a Brazilian label founded by Elisabeth Faria in 1998, exemplifies perfectly hand-made, very couture pieces. The show takes place at her new ateliers in Belo Horizonte. Includes an interview.Life in Brazil beats to the rhythm of the samba and revolves around all that glitters as is the case for Vivaz, a label created in 1998 by Elisabeth Faria as a brand specialising in evening wear. Surrounded by her two daughters Camilla and Isabela and with the help of her studio, the designer, (who sells her clothes in more than 120 stores across Brazil but also in Europe and the Middle East), highlights her knowledge of all things handmade. It is in her ultra modern factory in Belo Horizonte, before the eyes of her atelier workers executing and putting the finishing touches to her designs, that her collection for winter 2014 is revealed. There is a successful union between evening outfits with a touch of sportswear and layering effects; long, art-deco style dresses adorned with grey beads, tunic-jumpers stitched onto plain dresses or skirts. Gowns embroidered with pearls shimmer like fish scales, a mixture of long and short produced in deep and sensual colours accentuate this embellished femininity of the entire collection… Interview: Elisabeth Faria: I am really happy because I am launching this new factory right now so there are a lot of employees who have been working with us for fifteen years and now they have a really huge space where they can work in a calm, really good atmosphere. The work that they do involves a lot of passion because we work with hand-made products so we have to do it with a lot of love and patience and this new space brings all this to the employers so we are really happy because of it. Minas Fashion Week in Belo Horizonte: designers to remember

" Brazilian city, Belo Horizonte, has witnessed the growth of its important textile industry, a sector that has sponsored fashion designers for ten years, inviting them to showcase their collections. Take a look back at the 5 Brazilian labels that got noticed at this fashion week.Belo Horizonte, a city of 4 million residents, is part of the region home to the most important gold and diamond mines in the world and where for nearly ten years the textile industry has sponsored a fashion week that allows Brazilian labels to showcase their collections, which are distinguished by two trends; a casual style and sparkling evening wear… Our first discovery; Fabiana Milazzo. The two girls behind the label bring out an ultra glamorous silhouette, composed of lace and embroidery added to basic pieces like trousers, jumpers or gowns produced in coloured lace. They also use Brazilian silk, one of the most beautiful sorts in the world, which is painted in an art nouveau style… Viktor Dzenk takes inspiration from India, creating a mixed collection for men and women. Printed cashmere takes pride of place in a wardrobe that favours the informal. A more urban look from Plural Vicenza includes hooded-jumpers in animal print. This is the label’s 9th appearance at this fashion week, seeing revenue which increases every year. Moving onto Aurea Prates; this label showcases embroidery, using flowers and feathers to emphasise its sweaters. Chiffon mixes with linen whilst silk interacts with cotton for a casual yet glamorous wardrobe. A body-hugging silhouette, a detailed jumper and burnt-out silk trousers, a black dress embroidered at the side and a zip at the back, floral details emphasised, a jacket or a skirt composed of a blend of ribbons…the prime material for Apartemento that suggests femininity and never unveils too much. Fashion Fails of the Week

In this week's edition of fashion fails our offenders could have saved themselves with a trip to the dressmaker! We get that January Jones wanted to pay homage to her grandmother by turning her crocheted table cloth into a dress but it's just not working! We love the pop of skin thanks to the crochet-work, and if she cut this thing down just a bit it could have been pretty sexy! Then there's Rachel Bilson's spin on "Amish does the red carpet". If Rachel turned the Little House on the Prairie skirt into a mini, she could have been a winner this week! Last but not least, Julie Bowen! The Modern Family actress's dress length was all kinds of wrong! We are dying to take a pair of scissors to the bottom of this thing and turn it into the adorable shift dress it was meant to be!

Meet Naco Paris, a designer presenting his collection outside of Paris Fashion Week

" Ten years ago, Naco Paris, an agitated and rebellious designer, loved to challenge. In 2013, he maintains his punk spirit, presenting outside of the official Paris Fashion Week calendar and speaking frankly about the world of fashion today. Includes an interview with Naco-Paris.We met Naco Paris for the first time ten years ago…an agitator, a rebel, passionate about fashion and a dreamer, he dramatised his shows and his clothes, almost choosing to challenge the world of fashion rather than to please and to sell. Then, a lack of funds and visibility compared to bigger labels made him surrender and lay low before a comeback in 2012/2013, taking himself off the official calendar for Paris Fashion Week but maintaining his slogans which are this time funnier and present a mixed collection for summer 2014, mixing art, sportswear and sequins with humour and talent. Interviews : Naco Paris: Personally, I don’t create clothes according to gender or according to social status; I am free of all that, it doesn’t interest me, I design and people recognise themselves or not, so it was the same when it came to presenting the collection, especially if you have budget restrictions, you cannot compete with the big labels who host enormous shows and I said to myself, let’s do what we know how to do, which is something different, seeing as we are different and finally I invented a new vocabulary and for the first time, my work is really understandable. People understand it so I reused the label’s slogan, ‘Art is Resistance’, saying that is my way of resisting, to create fashion as I would art. But above all, we must never forget that it is a consumer product which must attract customers and sell itself and we have just opened more corners in the biggest department stores in the world to achieve this. The mass market, large consumer groups and luxury groups which have become ultra marketable; I have to find my place between all these and there was a time when I thought I didn’t want to take part anymore, so I said to myself, ‘if I continue it is for these beautifully made clothes but I will do this by contesting those things which I don’t like.’ I am very punk at heart, although this is less obvious than it was ten years ago but this spirit remains and I like to break down things in order to rebuild them and I believe that there is something to reinvent and that is the reason why I continue working today. Brazilian designer Pedro Lourenço wins the Marie Claire Prize for Emerging Talent

" Meet Pedro Lourenço, a young, 24-year-old Brazilian designer who is already very experienced; being the son of famous designers, he has basked in these surroundings from a young age. The Brazilian government has made him the global spokesperson for Brazilian fashion, whilst he has also just won the Marie Claire Prize for Emerging Talent, awarded to him in Paris. Includes an interview with Pedro Lourenço.Meet Pedro Lourenço, a young, 24-year-old Brazilian designer who is already very experienced; being the son of famous designers, he has basked in these surroundings from a young age. For the last four years, he has been used to presenting his highly successful collections in his own country but also in Paris. Whilst he is aided by the Brazilian government, who has made him the global spokesperson for Brazilian fashion, he has also just won the Marie Claire Prize for Emerging Talent in France. Interviews : Pedro Lourenço: My parents are fashion designers so I have grown up with them coming to Paris during Fashion Week, during ‘Première Vision’ and fabric research and all that. So, for me it was very natural to become a fashion designer, it was a natural process. My first show was for my mother’s second label when I was twelve, so it was pretty scandalous! And then I did three seasons for my mother’s second label and then I did four or five shows in Sao Paulo Fashion Week with my own label but it was more of a conceptual exercise, it was not something to commercialise but was the best that it could have been because I could really develop myself as a designer. In many looks we wanted to explore this concept of having part of the look was taken out so you had just a skirt and no jacket or just a jacket and a basque but you don’t have a skirt so that was part of the concept of the collection. This butterfly laser-cut is made with lamé crêpe; the shoulders are very 40s, the basque has a silhouette but I always bring in vintage references in an abstract and technological way and all the linings of the sequinned dresses and skirts, they also have this same laser-cutting technique so you really have this feeling that the clothes are fading away; you lose the fine line where the silhouette ends. Brazil showcases new creations

" In Belo Horizonte, Brazil showcases new creations…Belo Horizonte, home to 4 million people and Brazil’s third largest city, known for its curved buildings by the architect Oscar Niemeyer, hosted one of the country’s most important fashion events with a focus on new, emerging creations seen across the work of four young and noteworthy designers… Firstly, we have Esdra by Sarah Scheffel who has been passionate about shoes since her childhood and has already gained international experience in Italy at Sergio Rossi. She is inspired by the Parisian woman with interplays of black and white stripes and hints of multicoloured embroidery. Femininity is enhanced by the use of lace and visible lingerie. Leather is adorned with metallic eyelets resulting in a more urban silhouette. Jardin, by Bharbara Renault, is inspired by Chinatown. Small plaited cloche hats crown the heads of the models and the designer works quilted leather to produce a tight-fitting dress, a jumper and coordinated outfits. LLAS is a label created in 2010 by sisters Lorena and Laura Andrade. These two young designers play with the effects produced by layering and transparency with embroidered tulle, creating a small yet utterly delicate and wonderfully constructed collection. Lucas Magalhaes, reworks an indigenous aesthetic for a graphic and colourful wardrobe. Across this event, one can only salute the initiative of the textile industry in this region of Brazil, which showcases a generation of promising designers, giving them the means to benefit from a project worthy of the most prestigious fashion weeks.

Fashion Fails of the Week

Is someone in Hollywood queasy? We spy what looks like a bottle of Pepto Bismol on Anne Hathaway! Her J. Mendel dress just fits weird and what's with pairing the light shift with black pumps? Then there's Rose McGowan whose pale, bar midriff, odd winter jacket and ripped jeans put her on the fail list for the week. Worst of all, she wore the look to a party hosted by Vogue. Kate Upton really took the cake this week thanks to her horribly matching shoe and tight dress combo.

Last Night's Look!

For once it isn't the amount of skin that has us talking, it's how skinny Lea Michele has been looking lately! The Glee star stepped out in an amazing cut-out dress at Elle's 20th annual Women in Hollywood celebration. Over at the Hollywood Film Awards, Sandra Bullock owned everyone else in a stunning LBD with lace detail. Olivia Munn also strutted her stuff ditching the conservative Newsroom attire for a green and black leopard gown. We have to hand it to Kanye West who presented at the awards looking oh-so-dapper and then jetted off to propose!

We spotted a major trend alert on a few ladies who opted to wear floor length gowns in different shades of blue! Brunette babes Freida Pinto and Camilla Belle opted to go a bit more neutral in their blush dresses. Leave it to Charlize Theron and Karolina Kurkova to turn the glam factor up a notch thanks to the fabulous gold embellishment on their dresses!

Fashion Fails of the Week

This weeks fashion fails come courtesy of the New York Film Festival. These looks from the premiere of Her were so bad we've been talking about them all week! Amy Adams dress may have come straight from the Spring 2014 runway, but instead of landing in the garbage, Amy decided to try to pull off the look. Palazzo pants alert! Olivia Wilde rocked the trend and we really wished she paired the baggy bottom with a sexier top! Leave it to Rooney Mara to have entirely too much going on. A pleather bodice, keyhole center and skirt made of foil, we don't know where to look first! Sorry ladies, hopefully your acting chops in Her are better than your fashion choices.

Fashion Fails of the Week

Mischa Barton's see through tank top and skirt that was way too tight put her at the top of our fashion fails this week. We hope this look never sees the light of day again! A pink sat bra, matching skivvies and saddle shoes could only be worn by one person - Miley Cyrus. She thought it would be a good idea to wear this look to her album release party. Normally Jennifer Lopez can do no wrong, but there is nothing right about the Zuhair Murad velvet lace gown she wore this week. It looks way more costume than couture. Better luck next week, ladies!

Fashion Fails of the Week

We can't believe we're putting Kate Upton in any sort of category that involves a "fail", but her lace dress this week was just too bad to ignore. And if you told us Eva Longoria would ever be one of our fails too, we would have called you loco! Her red dress matches the carpet, and that's never the goal. The cut out also looks like something Cher or Gaga would wear. Kate Perry has also been looking frumpy lately. She¡s been parading all over Paris Fashion Week looking like a hot mess!
